When adapting favorite storybooks, add icons or symbols from the user’s AAC system. You can add symbols to represent repeated phrases, but also try to describe the picture on each page as this is where preliterate individuals get the meaning. Read each page of the story first using fun intonation and rhythm, and then point to the symbols you’ve added and model the use on the AAC system. As storybook reading is an excellent opportunity for modeling, do not prompt the individual to produce the symbols unless he or she initiates production on their own. This way the storybook reading is enjoyable and not perceived as a demand for performance.
